Data Roundtable Review: Who Do We Serve?

On June 22, 2021 the Mobilize Team met with Food Bank leaders from across the nation to discuss their big data needs and how we can best implement that data to end hunger in America.

Throughout the roundtable, attendees discussed both the technical and abstract challenges of big data utilization in the service industry. It was widely agreed upon that, due to the use of multiple tools that do not communicate with one another, data compilation and utilization often must be done by hand and can take intolerable amounts of time. It was this problem that Mobilize Enterprise was designed to address. With Enterprise’s all in one analytics system, data is easier than ever to export, analyze, and share.

Other key takeaways from the roundtable included:

  • Data is only as useful as the story we can tell with it.
  • Demographic statistics are powerful tools within the Food Service community as they help communicate who we are serving and who we are not.
  • Data collection systems currently in use are rife with communication issues and often require time consuming manual analysis to be effective. Integrated, seamless data is needed to make informed decisions in a timely manner.
  • The data regarding food choice and nutritional options as those concepts relate to rural or urban communities is difficult to comprehend without a nation-wide information to draw from.
  • Ultimately, we are interested in using data to analyze the core social determinants of food insecurity. Understanding this data will help us understand how to remedy the further social challenges as well.

To end hunger, understanding the stories data can tell us about who we’re serving and the systemic root causes of food insecurity nationwide is our most valuable insight. Here at Mobilize, we see the mission of ending food insecurity and the effective utilization of data as inseparable. We are committed to aiding our food bank partners with whatever tools and feature sets we can.
